Casino Royale Karlsbad VideoCasino Royale - Karlovy Vary SIDE BY SIDE Comparison
James Bond and Vesper Lynd were standing at the reception desk that you can see in the next photo. When Bond asked Vesper to pay for their stay, there were stairs and corridor visible in background, the same as in next photo.
Elevator doors look the same as in the film. Vesper Lynd got into the elevator alone and asked Bond to take another one. As you can see, currently there is a mirror inside the elevator.
In the film there was wooden wall. When the elevator doors closed the receptionist came up to Bond and gave him an envelope with car keys.
It was real parking lot at Goethova stezka street in front of Gradhotel Pupp see next two photos. In the evening James Bond walked from the hotel to Casino Royale.
In background you could see Grandhotel Pupp as in the photo below. The building is located very close to the Granhotel Pupp.
There was no access to the building for several years. Currently it is open for visitors. In the corner of a large room upstairs there is a poster with photos from the film set.
You can see there how the interior of the building became interior of Casino Royale. General casino room and the staircase were filmed in that building.
The room where Bond and Le Chiffre were playing poker was built in film studio in Prague. There were film lights mounted over the set, therefore magnificent ceiling in the room was not visible in the film.
There were tables in the middle of the room and bar counter between columns, all the rest such as paintings on a wall and lamp were unchanged.
It still looks as in the film. James Bond walked along the room. At the beginning of the shot you could see the painting over the door on the right in photo above.
Below you can see the opposite side of the room. During a break in the game of poker James Bond and Vesper Lynd were attacked at the hotel by two assasins.
Do not expect a five star hotel - the Grand Hotel Pupp is nowhere near that kind of standard. Carlsbad does have a very good five star hotel, unfortunately it is not the Grand Hotel Pupp.
The James Bond film, Casino Royal, mainly used the exterior of the hotel to represent the Hotel Splendide, and as a film set it does looks very grand.
The architecture and setting is by far the best part of this sprawling hotel complex. It is basically two hotels spliced together by a rather unattractive concourse.
Understandably the rather down-market casino was not used by the film makers - it just doesn't make the grade in anyone's estimation.
The rooms are contemporary and smartly decorated. I stayed in a double, my friend a single. The rooms are not air conditioned which is definitely problematic in the summer as leaving a window open at night is an open invitation to every biting critter this wooded valley is home to.
The beds are comfortable, but the obsession of providing single duvets, folded sideways is bizarre - it means you have to re-make your bed before you can sleep in it.
I guess having single duvets, that get kicked-off in your sleep, give greater access to the host of nocturnal nasties that fly in through your open window.
Breakfast is served in the very grand Festive Hall. At first the buffet appears to be substantial and then you quickly realise that the hot offerings revolve around sausage and egg.
The bacon, when present, lies in pools of hot fat: The cereals were of a poor standard. A big bonus of breakfast is the provision of freshly cooked-to-order pancakes and omelettes.
The staff are hyper-efficient, sometimes too much so, as you find that they clear away and re-set tables in your temporary absence. One morning my table was re-set three times while I was awaiting a pancake or foraging the buffet.
The bathrooms are tiny and most are just shower rooms - at least the ones with a view are, the proverbial cat would be decapitated if you tried to swing it in the bathroom.
Rooms with a bath are treated with a better sized alternative. The two parts of the hotel are not very well connected, access and egress from one to the other means that you take a walk through the middle of the fine dining restaurant and the bar.
Both reception areas are comparably poky with other European grand hotels. Whereas I received a satisfactory service from this team on the Riverside part of the complex, the staff on the Parkside seemed at best indifferent to the needs of its customers.
Staff stood idly by as a man confined to a wheel chair was unsuccessfully attempting to access the building, I had to step in and offer assistance in the end.
The hotel spa is efficiently run, employs great staff and is well-equipped. The swimming pool is one of the best and cleanest that I have used in continental Europe, it easily rivals some of the great spa pools of Austria and Hungary that I have visited.
Overall, I was disappointed by the Grand Hotel Pupp, its architectural grandness is eclipsed by patchy service and poor utilisation. The management need to rethink how the building works.
Dear Paul S, We appreciate hearing your comments and ideas. The Grandhotel Pupp is a big hotel with two buildings and two receptions for your comfort.
Every year we renovate the public premises and some rooms as well. The process goes continually but not all modern trends can be applied in historical traditional hotel so promptly.
We regret that you cannot write only positive about our staff, this should be advantage for our services. We share all information with them and hope you give us the chance to enjoy the hospitality of the Grandhotel Pupp in future.
The spa and pool were first class, my wife had an excellent Ayurvedic massage The not so positives The rooms have no AC so quite hot in summer, but room good size.
The staff in restaurant didn't want to let me in because I was wearing jeans!?! But I told them I was a guest of the hotel so they reluctantly let us eat an expensive small.
Breakfast was great if you like 50 types of sausages and not much else, but staff were badly trained with the omletlette chef setting his paper towels on fire, a waitress dropping a full jug of milk next to me, covering my heads with milk spray, and the just let it soak into the carpet without cleaning up, and finally as we were leaving another waitress dropped a glass of apple juice onto the table drowning my cap in it It transpired that the beer spa was off the agenda in any event as it was already booked up, so we were offered a ninety minute hot stone massage in the hotel relaxation room as an alternative, so with the teething problems we had experienced getting us hot under the collar, this was a timely offer!!!
Later that afternoon we were scheduled to attend the shooting range, but again this was offsite and some 3 km from the hotel, but in a forest with no signage and a steep stepped approach that only the physically fit could overcome.
We utilised the services of a taxi to the range that the hotel kindly ordered for us, but at our expense. The gun range though has to be one of the highlights of the weekend, with the range itself based in a seedy and remote location in a converted crypt.
We were offered twenty bullets and a choice of pistols, ranging from the Walther PPK through to a Glock and various semi-automatic machine guns.
With ten bullets per gun we each had a crack at the Walther and then swapped for another gun. The riddled paper target was an unusual holiday souvenir to bring back with us, but being from the UK and it's no gun law, this was a rare opportunity to have access to and fire a real weapon.
At last, we were back on the trail of agent !!! The Grand Restaurant is the centre piece of the hotel and is even more beautiful than in the film, with the luxurious surroundings, candlelit atmosphere and quiet ambience it completely took our breath away and made any service problems we had experienced so far pale, away into insignificance.
The a la carte food and waiter service is first class and the four course meal is one of the best meals I can remember ever having.
The third and final day was a lazy one, which we set aside to exploit the hot stone massage, sauna and roman bath. The facilities including a gym, all of which are on the first floor of the hotel were of excellent quality and can be accessed twelve hours each day, seven days a week.
The evening allowed us to enjoy the re-scheduled luxury meal in the hotel's English themed Becher Bar. Now we had reached the end of the trail for agent and liked what we had found.
Yes there were a number of issues that the hotel needs to address such that needlessly distracts and undermines the hotel's reputation.
But overall, this is first class and affordable access to the lifestyle of Bond and one not to be missed. Bond Lifestyle is an unofficial information resource and is not linked to the official James Bond production companies.
